Latest Single Release Not the One

Whilst clearly touched by the light of a 60’s torch song, Kate Vigo’s latest single ‘Not The One’ has a clear contemporary edge. Featuring the musically adventurous spirit that quickly has become Vigo’s calling card, ‘Not The One’ is a blend of sweeping strings, a Shangri-la’s back beat and a whistling riff that is bound to stay on your lips for days.

Turning the tradition of the girl singer at home crying over lost love on its head ‘Not The One’ is cute but cutting. Says Vigo of the track,“I wanted to do a cute 60’s inspired number that says you’re really nice and it would be easy to play along but… you’re just not the one. Sorry.”

The release of ‘Not The One’ is just the latest in a round of wins for Vigo in 2012. Her previous single ‘Wanna Run’ was recently selected to be a finalist, from a pool of over 16,000 entries, in the International Songwriting Competition’s Unsigned Category, the winners of which will be announced this May.

In celebration of ‘Not The One’ Kate Vigo will be hitting the road next month when she plays shows along side fellow Melbourne popstress, Emmy Bryce.

The New Single – The Stereo:

A desperado-disco shoot out. Donna Summer stares down Nancy Sinatra in a dark disco party track where retro synths mingle with classic 60s guitar.

    The New Album:

Snappy pop tunes with driving tempos and peppy beats and lyrics. Something to dance around your bedroom to! Reminiscent of production sounds that the Rage generation grew up with, referencing vintage classics but informed with a contemporary edginess. Like a 60’s girl band flirting with 80’s pop, tainted with a mood-lit soundscape that draws from David Lynch imagery.

    Kate Vigo Bio:

With her next musical mission Kate Vigo continues her cosmic journey through and outside of genres, calling upon her uncanny non-linear perception of time that allows her to see everything that was, is, or could be at the same time. From the unearthing of raw and acoustic timbres as realised in her last exploration “Someone Better”, to her endeavour to fuse the organic and the synthetic in her upcoming sessions with renowned producer and composer Jan Skubiszewski along with band member and co-producer Dan Macdonald, Kate will undoubtedly prove herself as an artist in full command of her craft. Kate’s fearless compositional approach salutes her influences from “The Immaculate Collection” to “Blue Velvet” and flows out into her song writing, capturing a reminiscence combined with a contemporary feel to her upcoming release.

The new album promises driving tempos and peppy beats and lyrics; Kate says “A lot of my existing work is a little dark and broody, inspired by the beauty in tragedy. Now I feel like I want to have fun and write songs people can dance around in their bedroom to. There is definitely still a dark element though”.

Coming from an enriched musical platform Kate has unrelentingly launched herself at a vast array of projects, including a recent collaboration with Clare Bowditch that will feature on the new album. In 2010 Kate’s attitude toward her craft propelled her into the Australian Music consciousness and achievements such as a Musicoz Award for Best Video for ‘The Way You Are’, selection to attend the APRA/AMCOS Song Summit in Sydney, featuring on MAX Music, a track on Network Ten’s new series Offspring, a live performance on ABC’s Art Nation, and receiving radio airplay on Triple J, Radar Radio and Fox FM.

    REVIEWS

“A great record, full of vocal magic and seductive loops that are by turns playful, wistful and dark. It’s experimental pop that’s still fun, sitting somewhere between Billie Holiday and Zap Mama…self-penned wistful love-songs which are personal, but oddly universal…Eclectic, versatile, part pop, electronic and stylish ‘60s torch rock, all awesome.”
    Beat Magazine

“Kate Vigo’s voice is soaring…her poignant portrayal stops you in your tracks.”
    Inpress

“A little bit pop, and a whole lot entrancing.”
    Herald Sun, HIT

“In the wake of Lily Allen, Adele and Duffy, Britain has put out such an army of young, nice-but-mouthy-when-they-need-to-be soulful female singers. Vigo’s doing a damn impressive job of picking up our local slack in this department, proving as vocally powerful and potentially feisty as any of the above.”
    Rave Magazine

“Kate Vigo was born with the music inside her and she’s just trying to let it out. Truly awe-inspiring, breathtaking, a pleasure to watch and possessed of a voice that comes from somewhere deep and sacred, simple and fun …the romanticism and presence she exuded transformed the club into a secret French Resistance speakeasy.”

MAX WALKER Biography – Lead Guitar

I have fostered an active interest in a diverse range of musical styles since taking up guitar at age 10. My early studies were devoted to a combination of virtuosic rock technique, blues and classical guitar. I later developed a passion for jazz and experimental music, seeking a comprehensive musical education while attuning my ears to the cutting edge of music making. Inspired by the potential of audio technology and the sonic malleability of the instrument, I continue to explore traditional and non-traditional ideas of the electric guitar’s role and aesthetic in contemporary music.

In 2005 I completed a Bachelor of Music Performance (Improvisation) at the Victorian College of the Arts. I have since performed in a number of professional ensembles spanning genres such as jazz, soul, rock, flamenco, dub and avant-garde improvisation. In 2008 I travelled to Spain in order to study with leading Flamenco musicians, completed a course at Taller Flamenco, Seville, where he was immersed in the Flamenco community, and gained valuable first hand experience of the music and culture.

In recent years I have developed a unique approach to guitar playing that uses a range of technologies and techniques to produce exotic and uncharacteristic sounds. I am adept at the use of complex signal processing and effects, the live manipulation of guitar sound through laptop, as well as sample and loop-based performance. The resulting pallet of timbres ranges from lush atmospheric textures and eerie soundscapes, to percussive and multi-layered eruptions of sound.

In 2009 I completed Honours in Music Performance (VCA) as well as performing and recording regularly.
